Chinese Entertainment in Dubai

From a five-drummer lion dance opening a mall activation to a single bian lian face-changer working the corporate top table, Chinese cultural entertainment is one of the most photogenic, most-shared acts you can put at an event. Bella Entertainment books authentic Chinese performers across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the wider UAE — every performer trained in China or by a recognised Chinese cultural association, performing in traditional costume with live percussion and genuine technique.

Demand spikes sharply in the weeks around Lunar New Year (January–February), when hotels, malls and corporates compete for the same handful of reputable lion-dance troupes. Book six to eight weeks ahead for CNY. Outside that window we have full availability year-round for corporate galas, weddings, product launches and cultural nights.

Chinese Acts We Book

Pick one, or combine several for a full cultural showcase:

  • Lion dance (Nan Shi / Cai Qing) — two performers inside each lion, 2–4 drummers, cymbals and gong; the traditional "plucking the greens" blessing routine to bring fortune. Available in 2-lion, 4-lion and 6-lion formats.

  • Dragon dance — 9-to-15-metre silk dragon manipulated by 9–13 performers. A headline piece, needs 20 × 4 m of clear space.

  • Chinese drum troupe — 4-to-12 drummers on traditional tanggu barrel drums. Powerful 10-minute opener, works with or without lion dance.

  • Bian lian (face-changing opera) — Sichuan opera's signature act: the performer swaps painted silk masks faster than the eye can follow, 15–20 times in 6 minutes. Extraordinary close-up.

  • Chinese calligraphy live performance — a master calligrapher writes a greeting, guest name or brand tagline in real time on a 2-metre scroll.

  • Guzheng, erhu and pipa musicians — traditional Chinese string instruments, solo or in ensemble, for cocktail receptions and dinner ambience.

  • Fan dance and umbrella dance ensembles — 4-to-8-dancer choreographed routines in traditional hanfu attire.

  • Chinese tea ceremony — a tea master performs the full gongfu ceremony as a seated or standing showcase for small VIP groups.

Events We Perform At

Chinese entertainment fits cleanly into a wide set of event formats:

  • Lunar New Year activations — hotels, malls, F&B, financial district; January–February is peak season

  • Mooncake Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) — September; a quieter but established demand window

  • Chinese and mixed-culture weddings — tea ceremony, lion dance entrance, red-envelope moment

  • Corporate galas for Chinese-owned businesses or China-facing companies — banks, trade councils, diplomatic events

  • Product launches targeting the Chinese consumer market — luxury, automotive, real estate, jewellery

  • Shopping mall openings and anchor-store launches — lion dance is the traditional blessing ceremony

  • Hotel F&B openings — Chinese restaurant launches, dim sum brunches, Sunday Chinese-themed events

  • Cultural exchange and diplomatic events — consulate programming, heritage festivals, expo participation

Lunar New Year: How to Book Without Missing Out

CNY is the single busiest week for Chinese entertainment in the UAE. A few realities to plan around:

  • Lock dates 6–8 weeks ahead. By mid-December the best lion dance troupes are 80% booked for CNY week.

  • Choose the blessing moment. Most lion dances are booked for the cai qing — "plucking the greens" — where the lion eats a lettuce or orange and spits it back, blessing the space. This typically happens 10 minutes into the act. Tell us your key photo moment.

  • Coordinate with the venue's event calendar. Many malls and hotels run their own CNY programming; if you're a tenant, align your private activation with the building's public schedule so drums don't overlap.

  • Red envelope (hong bao) etiquette. It's customary for the host to present the troupe with a symbolic red envelope at the end of the lion dance. We coach first-time hosts on the gesture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the performers actually Chinese, or just trained in Chinese dance?

The lion dance, dragon dance, drumming and bian lian troupes are performed by Chinese nationals or performers trained at recognised Chinese cultural institutions. Authenticity matters for the ritual elements (the blessing routine, the face-change technique) and for client expectations — especially at consular and Chinese-corporate events.

What space do lion and dragon dances need?

A two-lion performance needs a minimum 5 × 5 metres of clear floor with at least 3.5 metres of height clearance (the lions lift onto poles and shoulders). The full dragon dance needs a 20 × 4 metre corridor or circle. We send a venue-requirements PDF at the contract stage.

Can you perform indoors at a hotel ballroom or mall atrium?

Yes, indoors or outdoors. The only constraints are height clearance for the lifts and noise — the drums are loud, so if a speaker is on the same programme, schedule the lion dance at the beginning or end, not in the middle of speeches.

Is there a quieter Chinese act that works during dinner?

Yes. The guzheng or erhu solo is ideal as live dinner accompaniment — traditional, atmospheric, unobtrusive. Pair a quiet dinner set with a loud lion-dance opening and a bian lian finale for a full cultural arc.

Can the lion dance incorporate our brand or logo?

Yes. We can customise the colour scheme of the lion head (reds, golds, metallics) to match brand palette, add a branded scroll for the calligrapher to write on, and programme the plucked greens to reveal a brand message, product or logo.

How far ahead should I book for Lunar New Year?

For CNY (late January / early February): 6–8 weeks minimum. Premium dates (CNY Eve, first day of CNY, Saturday/Sunday of CNY week) typically sell out 10–12 weeks ahead.
