Summary

Zaffa in Dubai is the drummed wedding entrance procession that announces the bride, groom or both into the hall, usually run by a group of tabla and daf drummers with a lead singer or mizmar player and sometimes dancers or candle bearers. A small group of 4 to 6 drummers costs roughly AED 3,000 to 6,000, a full Egyptian or Khaleeji zaffa with singer and dancers runs AED 8,000 to 18,000+. It lasts 5 to 12 minutes and needs a hotel noise clearance and, for public venues, a DET permit.

1. The basics

What a zaffa dance actually is

A zaffa is not a stage show, it is a procession. A group of drummers, usually playing tabla (darbuka) and daf, walk the bride, groom or both into the wedding hall while a singer or mizmar player carries the melody above the beat. Guests stand, clap, sometimes join in behind the couple. In Dubai this is the single most requested wedding opener across Arab, Khaleeji and increasingly South Asian and Western weddings, because it works in almost any venue and takes almost no setup beyond a clear walking path from the door to the stage.

The word itself comes from the Arabic for a wedding procession. What varies by region is the instrumentation, the tempo, whether dancers or candle bearers are added, and whether a female-only version is used for the ladies' hall at Khaleeji and Emirati weddings. That's the part most couples booking their first zaffa dubai group get wrong: they assume it is one fixed format, when really it is a family of formats and the venue, guest mix and hall setup should decide which one you book.

2. Regional styles

Egyptian zaffa, Lebanese zaffa Dubai and the other regional styles

The Egyptian zaffa is the loudest and most theatrical version: heavy tabla and daf drumming, a lead vocalist singing traditional Egyptian wedding songs, sometimes a mizmar (a double reed horn with a sharp, carrying tone), and often a sword or candle element carried ahead of the couple. It suits couples who want maximum energy and don't mind a longer, louder entrance.

A Lebanese zaffa in Dubai tends to be slightly more melodic, built around dabke rhythms and a singer performing Lebanese wedding repertoire, often blending into a short dabke line once the couple reaches the stage. It reads as more elegant and less percussion-heavy than the Egyptian version, which is why it's popular at Lebanese and Levantine weddings at hotels like Address Downtown and Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach.

Palestinian zaffa follows a similar dabke-driven format to the Lebanese style. Moroccan zaffa is a different animal entirely: it usually centers on an amariya, a decorated palanquin carrying the bride, lifted and carried in by bearers, accompanied by Gnawa-style drumming, ululation and sometimes fire elements, closer to a ceremonial arrival than a music act. Khaleeji zaffa, used at Emirati and Gulf weddings, leans on traditional Gulf drumming (the tabla and dana rhythms) with a men's group for the groom's hall and a separate, entirely female drummer and singer group for the ladies' hall.

If a Moroccan-style entrance is what you actually want, our dedicated acts directory lists Moroccan zaffa and amariya groups separately, since the booking, props and pricing differ from the drummed Arabic formats covered here. Couples wanting a dabke line after the zaffa, rather than folded into it, usually book both from the same act page to keep pricing and logistics in one quote.

3. Group sizes

Zaffa drummers Dubai: group sizes and what's in each

Group size is the main price driver, more than region or venue. Here is what each size band typically includes.

  • Small (4 drummers): tabla and daf only, no singer, 5 to 6 minute walk-in, suits a smaller hall or a budget-conscious booking.
  • Standard (6 to 8 performers): drummers plus one singer or mizmar player, this is the most booked configuration for hotel ballroom weddings.
  • Full zaffa group (10 to 14 performers): drummers, singer, mizmar, and either dancers or candle/sword bearers, an 8 to 12 minute procession with a stronger visual element.
  • Dual-hall Khaleeji package: a male drummer group for the groom's majlis or men's hall plus a fully female drummer and singer group for the ladies' hall, priced as two separate bookings run in parallel.

Most Dubai weddings book the standard size. Couples doing a grand Palace or Atlantis ballroom entrance, or wanting the zaffa to double as photo content, usually step up to the full group.

4. Zaffa price Dubai

Zaffa price in Dubai: the full table

Prices below are current rates for Dubai and Abu Dhabi weddings and cover performer fees, traditional costumes and their own sound reinforcement for the procession. They exclude the venue's AV system if the zaffa needs to plug into house sound, and exclude any DET or venue permit fee, which we handle separately depending on venue.

Moroccan zaffa with amariya6 to 10 bearers plus drummers8 to 12 minutes9,000 to 16,000

Rates move with season. October through April is peak wedding season in the UAE and quotes toward the top of each range are common on Thursday and Friday dates at five-star venues. Off-season weekday bookings usually land toward the lower end. Adding a mizmar player, extra candle or sword bearers, or a live fire element on top of a standard group typically adds AED 1,000 to 3,000.

5. Wedding timeline

Where the zaffa fits in the evening

The zaffa almost always happens at the grand entrance, after the majlis and cocktail hour and right before the couple's first dance or the start of dinner service. It is the moment guests move from the reception area into the main hall, so the drummers typically start outside the ballroom doors and walk the couple the full length of the room to the stage.

A second, shorter zaffa is sometimes booked for the groom's entrance alone, particularly at Khaleeji and Emirati weddings where the groom enters the men's hall separately before joining the bride later. Some couples also use a scaled-down zaffa, just the drummers, to open the cake cutting or a late-night after-party segment, though this is less common and usually a 2 to 3 minute add-on rather than a full booking.

Timing needs to be locked with the venue's banquet team and your planner in advance, since a 10 minute drummed procession through a ballroom changes the run sheet for catering and photography. Get this wrong and either dinner service backs up behind a longer-than-planned zaffa, or the drummers are rushed and cut the performance short.

6. Ladies' hall and hotel rules

Ladies-only zaffa and hotel drum restrictions

For Khaleeji, Emirati and many conservative Arab weddings, the ladies' hall requires a fully female performer lineup: female drummers, a female singer, and if dancers are added, female dancers only, with no male crew present in the hall during the performance. We book and confirm this in writing before the date, not on arrival, because it is the single detail that causes the most complaints when it slips through a general booking request.

Most five-star Dubai and Abu Dhabi venues (Atlantis The Palm, Madinat Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab, Address hotels, Emirates Palace, Yas Island properties) allow live drumming in ballrooms but cap volume and require the performance to end by a set curfew, typically between 11pm and 1am depending on the venue and whether neighboring function rooms are in use the same night. Outdoor garden or beach venues sometimes restrict drums entirely after a certain hour due to noise carrying to nearby villas or other hotels. Always confirm the venue's drum and curfew policy at the same time you confirm your DJ or band's sound curfew, since they are governed by the same house rules.

The most expensive mistake: booking the zaffa without checking the hall's drum policy

Couples regularly book a full zaffa group, pay a deposit, then discover two weeks before the wedding that their venue restricts live drumming after a certain hour, or requires a smaller acoustic version for an indoor ladies' hall next to a sleeping guest floor. Re-arranging a zaffa's timing or downsizing the group at short notice is far harder and pricier than confirming drum policy, curfew and hall layout with the venue before you sign. Always check this in the same call where you confirm catering and AV.

7. Permits and lead time

Permits, planners and how far ahead to book

A zaffa performed at a private wedding inside a hotel ballroom or private villa usually only needs the venue's internal NOC (no objection certificate) for outside performers, arranged through your banquet or events coordinator. If the wedding is at a public or semi-public venue, or filmed for commercial promotion, a DET entertainment permit (formerly issued under DTCM) may apply, and we confirm this on a case by case basis when we take the booking. Our DET permit cost guide breaks down when a permit is actually required and what it costs.

Lead time in season, October to April, is 3 to 8 weeks for a standard zaffa group, longer for a Khaleeji dual-hall package or a Moroccan amariya since props and bearer training need more notice. Outside peak season, 2 to 3 weeks is usually workable. We coordinate directly with your wedding planner or the venue's events team on arrival time, load-in door, and run sheet placement so the drummers are in position before the couple's grand entrance cue, not scrambling at the door.

For the rest of the evening, most couples booking a zaffa also book a live band or DJ for the party segment, and sometimes a folk dabke troupe to follow straight after the zaffa. See our live music artists for hire in Dubai and DJ hire pricing guide if you're still deciding on the rest of the lineup, and our belly dancers for hire page if you want a solo performance later in the night rather than a group entrance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a zaffa dance?

A zaffa is the traditional Arabic wedding entrance procession, performed by a group of drummers, usually with a singer or mizmar player, who walk the bride and groom into the wedding hall to live drumming and music. It marks the start of the main reception and typically lasts 5 to 12 minutes depending on group size.

How much does a zaffa cost in Dubai?

A small drummer group of 4 costs roughly AED 3,000 to 6,000. A standard zaffa with 6 to 8 performers and a singer runs AED 6,000 to 10,000. A full group with dancers or candle bearers, 10 to 14 performers, costs AED 10,000 to 18,000 or more. Prices vary by season, day of week and venue.

What is the difference between Egyptian and Lebanese zaffa?

Egyptian zaffa is heavier on tabla and daf drumming, often with a mizmar horn and a louder, more theatrical entrance including candles or swords. Lebanese zaffa is more melodic, built around dabke rhythms and often flows into a short dabke line once the couple reaches the stage. Both use a lead singer performing traditional wedding songs.

How long does a zaffa performance last?

A standard zaffa lasts 5 to 8 minutes, timed to the walking distance from the ballroom entrance to the stage. A full group with dancers or bearers can run 8 to 12 minutes. Most venues and planners build a fixed slot into the run sheet so it doesn't delay dinner service.

Can I book a ladies-only zaffa for the women's hall?

Yes. For Khaleeji, Emirati and many conservative Arab weddings we book a fully female group, female drummers, singer and dancers if requested, with no male crew present in the ladies' hall. This should be confirmed in writing at the time of booking rather than assumed, since it affects which performers we assign.

Do I need a permit for a zaffa at my wedding?

Inside a hotel ballroom or private villa, you generally only need the venue's internal NOC for outside performers, arranged through the banquet team. A DET entertainment permit, the successor to the old DTCM permit, may apply at public venues or for filmed commercial content. We confirm this per booking and can advise before you sign anything.

How far in advance should I book zaffa drummers in Dubai?

Book 3 to 8 weeks ahead during peak wedding season, October to April, especially for Thursday and Friday dates at five-star venues. Outside peak season, 2 to 3 weeks is usually enough. Khaleeji dual-hall packages and Moroccan amariya bookings need more notice because of prop preparation and bearer training.
